Meal preparation & nutrition

Weight loss in an older person is rarely about appetite. It is about the effort of standing at a stove, food that went off unnoticed, or a diabetic diet nobody has explained twice. Somebody in the kitchen a few times a week fixes most of it — and eating with company is not the same meal as eating alone.

What a caregiver actually does

Not a category — the specific things that happen while somebody is in the house.

  • Shopping, and checking what is already in the fridge
  • Cooking to a diabetic, low-salt, renal or soft-food diet
  • Meals prepared and portioned ahead for the days we are not there
  • Sitting down and eating with them, which changes how much gets eaten
  • Fluids through the day — dehydration lands more older people in hospital than anything else
  • Telling you if the weight or the appetite is going the wrong way

Is it time?

What is usually happening when families call about this

If two or three of these sound like your house, it is worth a phone call. It costs nothing to ask.

Clothes are looser and they say they are "just not hungry"

The fridge has food in it that is well out of date

The same cereal for every meal because it is the easiest thing

A new diet from the doctor that nobody has actually implemented

How meal preparation & nutrition gets paid for

Three different situations, three different answers. One of these is yours.

Please read this bit

We are a non-medical home care company

That means our caregivers help with daily life — washing, dressing, meals, mobility, housekeeping, company and getting to appointments. It is skilled, trained, background-checked help, and for most families it is exactly what is needed.

If any of that is what you need, say so and we will tell you straight — often the answer is a home health agency or hospice for the clinical side, with us doing the daily hours around it. We work alongside both, and we would rather point you to the right place than take a booking we cannot do properly.

What we do not do

  • No nursing care, injections or IVs
  • We remind and prompt about medication; we never administer it
  • No wound care, catheters or clinical procedures
  • No physical, occupational or speech therapy
  • No diagnosing, and nothing that needs a nurse or a doctor

Questions families ask

She says she eats. She does not.
Very common, and not usually a lie — people genuinely forget. A caregiver in the kitchen sees what is in the bin and what is still in the fridge, and you get told the truth rather than the answer she gives on the phone.
Can you cook the food he actually likes?
Yes, and please tell us what that is. Food from home matters more than a nutritionally perfect plate he pushes around.
